Aviation Medicine/ Physical Exams

Hours of Operation: 0700-1530

Direction of Services: Provides routine and special duty physical examinations for shore based active duty personnel and candidates for service academies and ROTC Programs.

- Routine physical examinations are conducted Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 0645-1500. Walk-ins are welcome by availability basis only.

- Birth Month Recall appointments are done by appointment only Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 1240-1500.

- Reenlistment and extensions screenings are done on a walk-in basis 0700-1500.

- Fire Fighting screenings are done on a walk-in basis 0700-1500.

- Clearance notices are done on a walk-in basis from 0700-0800.

Problems with obtaining an appointment or special situations should be addressed by contacting the Aviation Medicine Department.

Routine Physical Examinations requirements are as follows:

  • Conducted every five years, up to the age of 50.
  • 50-60 years of age every two years and annually thereafter.
  • Members on flight status will receive an annual physical exam, except for the age of 20,25,30,35, 40 etc.

Separation Physical Examination requirements are as follows:

  • A TB skin test must be performed within 1 year of separation/retirement.
  • A HIV test is required within one year of your separation date.
  • Separation physicals can be done up to 90 days prior to separation
  • Retirement physicals can be done up to one year prior to retirement with lab work being re-drawn within 90 days prior to separation.

Optometry Division provides complete eye and vision exams for active duty personnel and PRIME enrollees.

Photo Refractive Keratotomy (PRK, a form of laser vision correction) is available to active duty Navy personnel on a very limited basis at the Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, VA..

This department does not fit contact lenses.

Occupational Health Division provides services for active duty personnel, eligible civilian employees of Naval Air Station, Oceana and Dam Neck Annex.

Employees are also seen for job related injuries and illnesses, second audiogram failure, and reproductive surveillance.

Staff members are available for health and safety walk through/site visits.
