Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR)

Hampton Roads is a nautical term, but for the hundreds of thousands of military service personnel (in all five branches) and their families, it is also synonymous with recreation. The area installation Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs provide service members and their families with numerous on- and off-base opportunities for fun — often at little or no cost. Outlets include kayaking trips, paintball, sporting events, discount tickets to shows by nationally known performers and much more. Probably the best thing about MWR is that most events and discounts are offered to active-duty, retired and reserve personnel and their families in any branch of service.

The air station has an indoor pool for year-round swimming and a beach along the Pasquotank River with no lifeguards. There are outdoor grills, a picnic area and a pavilion at the beach. Rental equipment, such as boats and campers, is available at the gym.

Even though Fort Story is a quiet little Army post, and historic in its own right —the Cape Henry Light is the oldest federally funded lighthouse in the United States —there’s still enough to do to keep you occupied. And if you have relatives coming into town why not have them stay at the Cape Henry Inn. Or stay there or at one of the many beach cottages yourself for a nice weekend getaway.

Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek

The "amphib base," as NAB Little Creek is commonly called, is located on the south shores of the Chesapeake Bay, which means many of the base’s most popular activities revolve around water.

There are beaches of course. One beach caters to E-6 and below military members and their families while the other half is open to E-7s and above. There is an excellent and very popular marina complete with a well-stocked boating store on base. Across the base, an outdoor rental facility boasts a large selection of boats, canoes, camping gear and more.

For the landlubber, there’s the Eagle Haven Golf Course, whose many water hazards and constant sea breeze make for a challenge.
