Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR)
Hampton Roads is a nautical term, but for the hundreds of thousands of military service personnel (in all five branches) and their families, it is also synonymous with recreation. The area installation Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs provide service members and their families with numerous on- and off-base opportunities for fun often at little or no cost. Outlets include kayaking trips, paintball, sporting events, discount tickets to shows by nationally known performers and much more. Probably the best thing about MWR is that most events and discounts are offered to active-duty, retired and reserve personnel and their families in any branch of service.

There are beaches of course. One beach caters to E-6 and below military members and their families while the other half is open to E-7s and above. There is an excellent and very popular marina complete with a well-stocked boating store on base.
