Urology Procedures
Cystoscopy is a procedure that allows the Urologist to evaluate condition of your bladder, urethra and in males, your prostate.
Procedure: A urology tech will prepare you for the procedure. You will be asked to empty your bladder prior to the procedure. You will be placed in a gown and your genitalia will be prepped with an antiseptic spray. Anesthetic jelly will be inserted into the male urethra to minimize discomfort as the scope is being inserted inserted into the urethra. You may notice a slight burning sensation, pressure and urgency during the procedure, this feeling is normal. The scope will only be in the urethra for about 10 to 15 minutes.
Transrectal Ultrasound & Biopsy
A transrectal ultrasound is a procedure in which a probe is inserted into the rectum enabling sound waves to be bounced off the prostate gland creating a visual image on a monitor screen. Conditions of the prostate which is an indication for an ultrasound are enlargement of the prostate, stones, cancer etc… Prior to procedure you will be required to give yourself a fleet enema about 2-3 hours before.
Biopsy: If necessary, a biopsy of the prostate will be obtained by the doctor. An automatic-fired gun with needle is inserted through the probe and into the prostate to obtain samples of prostate tissue.
Vasectomy
This is a PERMANENT sterilization procedure where a portion of the vas deferens (sperm transport tube) is removed resulting in the inability to reproduce. Although there are operations to reverse this procedure, the results will vary. Therefore, if you think you will wish to have children in the near future in the unforeseen event of a divorce or death of a spouce or child make sure you think about this decision carefully.
Procedure: The urology tech will prep you with an antiseptic spray, and draped sterily on the exam table. The Urologist will inject local anesthesia into the skin and around the vas deferens. A portion of the vas will be obtained through a small skin incision and the ends of the vas are tied off with suture. The ends are placed back into the scrotum and clamps are applied to the wound edges to stop bleeding for 10-15 min.
Adult Circumcision
This is the surgical removal of the purpuse foreskin of the penis.
Procedure: You sign a consent form prior to operation. You will be prepped with an antiseptic spray to kill any bacteria present, and then you will be covered with sterile drapes. Your penis will be numbed by injecting anesthetic under the skin at the base of the penis. The numbness will last for approximately 1-2 hours. After the skin is removed the edges of the skin will be brought together using absorbable suture. The sutures will dissolve within 1-2 weeks. A dressing is placed around the penis. The procedure will take approximately 1 hour. There will be some discomfort due to the stitches, because the penis will tend to rub against clothing. This will continue until the stitches are dissolved.
IVP ( Intravenous Pyelogram )
This a radiological procedure that consists of a (kub) to check for positioning and technique as well as any foreign bodies. It then involves the injection of a radiopaque dye via vein that is filtered by the kidneys and helps us to visualize the urinary tract. This is normally done for patients with past history of kidney stones, trauma, and hematuria ( blood in the urine).
KUB
A KUB (kidneys, ureters, and bladder) is a standard x-ray used to rule out kidney stones in a patient. This consists of four basic films, an upper shot of the kidneys, a lower shot of the bladder, and two oblique shots of the kidneys.
VCUG (voiding cysto urethrogram)
This procedure is used to determine what is known as reflux. Reflux is when urine that travels down the ureters into to the bladder make a U-turn and reenter the kidneys causing them to become infected and irritated.
RUG (Retrograde Urethrgram)
This procedure is preformed specifically to look for a (Stricture). This a narrowing of the urine channel that decreases the flow of urine through the patient's urethra.
