General Information

  • Routine and acute eye care services are available to all TRICARE Prime beneficiaries at optometry clinics located in Tidewater area Military Treatment Facilities.

  • Eye exams are scheduled through the TRICARE Service Center and include a prescription for glasses (if needed) and an evaluation of eye health.

  • Active duty personnel may also choose from a selection of frames and order new glasses.

  • Retirees with a current prescription may order a new pair of glasses each year in the standard, navy issue, brown plastic frame.

Active Duty Info

  • Active duty personnel who are enrolled in the Navy Contact Lens program (some aviators in flying billets, air crew, submarine and special warfare personnel) are eligible for contact lens fitting services through Norfolk, Boone and Oceana clinics. (Chesapeake, Shipyard and TP Va. Beach clinics are not equipped to offer contact lens services).

  • A letter from the member's command, stating the reasons why contact lenses are mission essential, is required for enrollment in the contact lens program.

  • Patients who are not enrolled in the contact lens program but who are wearing disposable soft contact may be eligible to have their prescription renewed, as long as they meet the following criteria:

    1. They must have their old contacts available for evaluation on the eyes.
    2. They must have a copy of the old contact lens prescription, or else the contact lens boxes.
    3. The eyes must be free of any irritation from the old contacts.
    4. There must not be a major change in the prescription.
    5. There must not be a history of contact lens-related infections or pink eye.

PRK Info

  • Active Duty personnel may also request to be screened for PRK (photorefractive keratectomy , a form of laser vision correction) at the time of their eye exam.

  • PRK is available to active duty personnel on a "priority basis".

  • Those who are determined to be good
candidates (based on visual status and operational requirements) will be given the necessary paperwork to be placed on the waiting list.
