Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program
Supplemental Food
The WIC is a Department of Agriculture program to help ensure that pregnant women, new mothers, breastfeeding mothers, infants and children up to age 5, with lower incomes receive a diet high in protein, calcium, iron and vitamins A & C. It is not a welfare program. The benefits of WIC include
Participants receive vouchers that they can use to purchase specific foods such as milk, eggs, cheese, dry beans & peas, iron fortified cereals, fruit or vegetable juice, canned tuna, and peanut butter.
Qualifying for WIC is based upon total family income, family size and medical need determined by the WIC staff. For the military, income includes base pay, basic allowance for subsistence (separate rations), and most special pays (flight, submarine, sea pay, etc). It does not include basic allowance for housing. Mother and unborn baby count as two for family size.
If the mother qualifies for WIC, her baby automatically qualifies. If you have other children receiving free or reduced school lunch, you may alread qualify for WIC financially.
You should call or visit your closest WIC office to determine eligibility.
