Commander's comments - "Reflections on Memorial Day"
Growing up, many of us looked upon Memorial Day, as the beginning of the summer-a 3-day weekend to "celebrate" what to most of us was ancient history. This weekend, many of us overseas will reflect upon how our involvement in the war on terrorism impacts on our celebration. Yes it will be "Holiday routine"however, for most of us the actual memorial ceremony will take on new meaning. Many of us have participated in the ramp ceremonies, where the remains of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice are rendered final honors before their trip home. Many a tear has been shed at the sight of those flag draped transfer cases when we realize that they are us. This year, Memorial Day is our solemn remembrance and tribute to all our fellow service members. The fact that we are presently at war, and that we can relate to those young bodies before us makes this Memorial Day personal. We must put the "Memorial" back into our holiday routine. I urge you all to render honors in whatever way you can; attend or participate in a parade, go to the cemetery and place flags on graves, visit the VA hospital and talk to our Vets, wear your uniform with pride. Then go home and spend time with your family. Hug your kids and remember that the freedom we enjoy today is the result of the personal sacrifices of servicemen and women throughout the history of our country, and that history is now "living history," happening every day in front of our eyes and in our time. From Kuwait, have a reflective Memorial Day.
