Expeditionary
Medical Facility Portsmouth
Commander's comments.
April 1 marked the official transfer of authority from the 801st Combat Support Hospital to the Naval Expeditionary Medical Facility Portsmouth. This was documented by an official ceremony in which the Navy colors were unfurled in recognition of the Navy's assumption of responsibility for all levels of care in the Kuwaiti area and beyond. I think I can speak for everyone that all felt a great sense of pride as the colors were raised and Anchors Away was played. This was an auspicious occasion, as Navy Medicine with Portsmouth at the healm entered into uncharted waters in a sustainment capacity. We are charting a new course for future deployments. As recognition of our efforts, EMF Portsmouth was given Command and Control Authority of all level I and II activities, coordinating all levels of care around the the Level III facility. With one order, the Command grew to 400 personnel. This is a challenge, but I am confident that we are up to it.
The last few weeks have been spent orienting to Army policies and procedures. We are now fully immersed in patient care. Everyone is well, and adapting to their new environment. The weather is getting warmer, with temperatures last week into the 90's. Future challenges abound as the mission evolves. There is a potential move of the hospital and entire staff to a different location. More to follow on this as plans are solidified. The "B" det is being formulated at home station; however, final numbers and dates of rotation are still up in the air. Rumor control: There is no truth to the rumor that the "A" det has been extended. There have been a few requests to extend for the full year, however they will be evaluated after the 90-day mark.
Finally, let me say how proud I am of all the troops. Everyplace we are working we have made an impression. The patients have heard that the Navy has arrived, and are requesting to see the Navy providers. We have started to provide on site lens fabrication services. We are known as being customer friendly and professionally competent. The Portsmouth staff is truly the First and Finest, and I am proud to be your Commander. To all our loved ones at home, and our colleagues at the Medical Center I send regards and thanks for your support.
M.Snyder,Commander.
